Katha Stitch

Hand stitching is a very old tradition of India. the designs made using the needle and the thread is a way to express the views of an individual artisan .According to the recording of the history it is said that before 3000 years b.c. during the mohenjoaro and harrapan civilization it was found that the clothes worn by them were also hand stitched .later on the business capital of Bengal I.e. saptapgram or satgaon became famous for its fine needle work .katha is an embroidery section of needle work which dealt with fine stitches which is even mentioned in Buddhist and palli literature and the paninis book.
The history of katha goes around 1000  years back .In post and pre Vedic age katha stitch was also in use.
What is katha?
The katha means two or three old clothes stitched together to form a replacement of blankets for poor people’s later on it became famous among all the classes both higher and lower for its way of express I g different occasions through its stitch works ,the craftsmen expressed their views on epic tales ,mythology and other traditional motives .the usual designs are sun ,star, chakra, lotus and other gods and godess. It is also known as ‘nokshi katha’ because of its fine motives and know it is popular all over the world not only in Hindu religion but others also influence their views on working with katha in their own way .
Nowadays not only the blankets but other things are also made out of it like sarees ,stoles ,scarves, dhotis ,kurta, gift wrap and etc. Now it is a trendy fashion icon in the fashion industry the katha stitch is a vet primitive way although effective way of expressing an artisans feeling and emotions.
